I am an extremist and I would like to question you about the comment “A weakness is a strength taken to an extreme.” We each have passions, but what is the difference?
July 4th, 2007 at 11:46 pm
June, That is a good question. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Florence Littauer tells us that a weakness is simply a strength taken to an extreme. For example, a perfect melancholy is motivated to perfectionism. They like to do everything perfectly or to the very best of thier ability. But in their quest to do that they may micromanage the details of a project in order to make sure it is “perfect.” Most of us don’t’ like to be micromanaged. The need to do things perfectly can cause the perfect melancholy to be critical. If there are issues or insecurities in your life, they may drive the perfect melancholy to be overly critical and negative. The difference between a strength taken to an extreme and a passion is that a passion is a positive force in your life. A passion is not a weakness, it is a desire that motivates you to go the extra mile, it energizes you when you would normally be exhausted. If you find you are an extremist you might want to ask yourself, why? What is driving your extreme thinking or behavior? What is at stake? What are you telling yourself?
What would it take to back off from being an extremist? What would be the worst thing that could happen?
